Microsoft Relaunches PC Health Check Windows 11 Compatibility Tool

no thumb

We are just two weeks out from the October 5 launch of Windows 11. Since its launch, much has been made of the new features and design overhaul, but the big news around Windows 11 has been compatibility. Specifically, how Microsoft is taking a hard stance on cutting out some incompatible hardware.

With plenty of confusion still around this subject, Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool is making a comeback. This is a useful feature that allows users to see if their PC meets the hardware requirements for Windows 11.

Over recent months, Microsoft has been previewing PC Health Check on the Inside. It is now live for all users ahead of the full launch of Windows 11.

This is a new version of the tool that highlights all the areas a device may not be compatible with the new platform. For devices that do not meet compatibility requirements, users must remain on Windows 10. Microsoft will continue to support the soon to be legacy platform until 2025.

You can download the PC Health Check tool from Microsoft’s official link here.

I did just that and run the laptop I am writing this article on through the tool. My laptop is not compatible because of the processor. It’s ok, don’t worry about me as this is a secondary older machine I use and I will be making the jump to Windows 11 with another laptop.

However, my results do show that there will be millions of people unable to upgrade to Windows 11. My laptop is four years old, hardly ancient. Many will be in a similar situation where one aspect of their device is not compatible with Windows 11.

While much has been made of Microsoft demanding TPM 2.0 for security, my results show there are other areas where it is possible to get shut out from a Windows 11 upgrade. Microsoft has also taken a clear and tough stance. If you do not meet the requirements, you will not get Windows 11.

Tip of the day: When you boot Windows 10 it delays the launch of startup programs for ten seconds so your desktop and Windows services will have finished loading. If you want to speed up boot time, have a look at our tutorial about how to disable startup delay.

Microsoft Office 2021 Launching Alongside Windows 11

How and where to buy a Microsoft Office license

If you want some of the benefits of the cloud based Microsoft 365/Office 365 on premises, Office LTSC (Long Term Servicing Channel) is one option. It is one of Microsoft’s non-subscription versions of Office, alongside regular Office 2019. Microsoft is planning to launch Office 2021 alongside Windows 11 next month, while the new Office LTSC release is now generally available.

Office 2021 will launch on October 5, the same day Microsoft rolls out Windows 11 to the masses. As always, this is the non-subscription version that is not based in the cloud and is geared towards consumers.

According to Microsoft, Office 2021 will be a single use licenses for a single PC or Mac device. The company says pricing will remain the same as the outgoing Office 2019.

As for the Office LTSC, it is already widely available and brings Microsoft 365 benefits to regulated scenarios. Like most LTSC release from Microsoft, Office will have five years of support. It is worth noting that is also the support window Microsoft is promising for Office 2021.

Moving to Cloud

Microsoft is increasingly focused on moving users away from on-premises solutions and into the cloud. That includes for Office. However, the company says it will continue to release perpetual versions while driving customers towards the cloud:

“While this will not be our last perpetual release, we continue to make investments that make it even easier for customers to adopt Microsoft 365. In early 2020, we released a device-based offering for Microsoft 365 that delivers a true user-based experience for organizations that rely on shared workstations.”

Tip of the day: When you boot Windows 10 it delays the launch of startup programs for ten seconds so your desktop and Windows services will have finished loading. If you want to speed up boot time, have a look at our tutorial about how to disable startup delay.

Windows 11 ISO Preview Build 22454 Brings Small Improvements

Microsoft is rolling out its latest Windows 11 ISO image preview build. Specifically, the company is boosting the platform to build 22454 for users who want to do a completely fresh install. The update has been available since yesterday and adds a couple of changes, a host of fixes, and confirms plenty of known issues.

This is the same preview build that came to Windows Insiders at the end of last week.

Leading the changes is the addition of a modern context menu when users right click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. Elsewhere, Microsoft says there is now an option added to File Explorer and network sharing when right clicking. Specifically, it is now possible to pin the network share to the Quick Access menu.

Finally, Microsoft is now rolling out a new version of the Korean IME (Input Method Editors) for Windows 11. This was based on user feedback and Microsoft says it delivers a more accurate experience for Korean users on the platform:

“The updated version of the Korean IME follows the new visual design of Windows 11 with acrylic in the candidate window, a new selection visual, and dark mode support. It also improves improved performance and compatibility. The updated Korean IME is rolling out to a subset of Insiders in the Dev Channel first, to help us quickly identify issues that may impact performance and reliability. Over time, it will roll out to everyone in the Dev Channel. Please file feedback via Feedback Hub under Input and Language > Text Input.”

Also included in the changelog are known issues and fixes. There are too many of both to list here, so I recommend heading to Microsoft’s official release notes here.

ISO Image Warning

If you are installing Windows 11 from the ISO file, you need to ensure your hardware is compatible. Microsoft has recently issued a warning about users installing the platform clean without the proper hardware.

Windows 11 will only be available for laptops with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 or higher chips. There was thought to be a workaround in Microsoft’s TPM 2.0 demand. While the restriction means automatic updates to Windows 11 are not possible, users could still manually install the platform via an ISO file. Many have done just that during the preview process.

Microsoft now says that is not the case. The company warns it could withhold Windows 11 updates for users who take advantage of this technicality. Furthermore, Microsoft points out if may also withhold security and driver updates.

You can download Windows 11 ISO Build 22454.

Tip of the day: Did you know that your data and privacy might be at risk if you run Windows 10 without encryption? A bootable USB with a live-linux distribution is often just enough to gain access to all of your files.

If you want to change that, check out our detailed BitLocker guide where we show you how to turn on encryption for your system disk or any other drive you might be using in your computer.

Microsoft Edge Testing Wikipedia-Backed Site Information Pop-Ups

no thumb

Microsoft wants to provide wider tools alongside the lock icon to give users of Microsoft Edge more knowledge of website security. Specifically, the company is developing a solution that shows more details about a site in the information in a pop up.

Security is important, especially when browsing online. Many users are at risk from attack, so understanding if a website you visit is safe or not. A lock icon is a solid first step, showing that the site uses HTTPS and security tools like SSL encryption. However, it is no guarantee that the site is overall safe or not trying to scam you.

Moving forward, the pop up will show wider information about a site you are visiting, with details from Wikipedia. Ok, Wikipedia is hardly the final word in legitimate information, but the details should give users a solid knowledge of a site’s security.

However, it is easy for someone not associated with the website to edit a Wikipedia entry. There is some concern that the website may not agree with their depiction on Wikipedia. In other words, the information Microsoft presents may be incorrect or simply made up.

More Details

Microsoft has baked in a toggle to Microsoft Edge Dev and Edge Canary in testing. However, it is currently only available to select testers. As well as information from Wikipedia, the pop-up also shows social media pages associated with the site.

Also in Microsoft Edge Canary, the company is working on an “underside panel” that highlights the more important information from the site.

Tip of the day: With many reachable wireless access points popping up and disappearing again, the available networks list can become quite annoying. If needed you can use the allowed and blocked filter list of Windows 10 to block certain WiFi networks or all unknown WiFi networks.

Microsoft: Windows 11 Android Apps Not Coming to Xbox

no thumb

There has been plenty of confusion surrounding Microsoft’s support for Android Apps on Windows 11. At first it seemed the feature would land with the launch of Windows 11 on October 5. Microsoft soon nixed that notion, although a Windows Subsystem for Android page for the Microsoft Store was discovered on preview builds.

One of the most interesting aspects of that page was a suggesting Android apps would also work on Xbox. In a statement to Windows Central, Microsoft has now said Windows Subsystem for Android does not support Xbox consoles.

Android app support via the Amazon Marketplace on the new Microsoft Store is one of the big new features of Windows 11. When the feature was confirmed to not be launching with the platform, many worried this was another in a long line of blockbuster features Microsoft announces and then ditches.

Coming This Year

That does not seem to be the case with Microsoft still focusing on bringing Android apps to Windows. It is Microsoft’s latest effort to reduce the app gap. However, it is worth noting Amazon’s app store has significantly less apps than the Google Play Store (not least, Google apps).

“People will be able to discover Android apps in the Microsoft Store and download them through the Amazon Appstore – imagine recording and posting a video from TikTok or using Khan Academy Kids for virtual learning right from your PC. We’ll have more to share about this experience in the coming months. We look forward to this partnership with Amazon and Intel using their Intel Bridge technology,” Microsoft says.

Unlike Your Phone, that allows you to stream your Android phone to PC, app support will not rely on another device. Apps will be downloadable and usable directly within Windows without a third-party emulator.

Tip of the day: Having problems with pop-ups and unwanted programs in Windows 10? Try the hidden adware blocker of Windows Defender. We show you how to turn it on in just a few steps.

Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Launch on October 5, With Android Apps on Day 1

Microsoft announced Windows 11 back in June, and quickly began previewing the platform for Insiders. However, the company only offered a launch window of “this fall” or “this holiday season”. We expected an October release for the OS and now Microsoft has confirmed that. According to the company, Windows 11 will begin shipping on October 5:

“Today, we are thrilled to announce Windows 11 will start to become available on October 5, 2021. On this day, the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase. A new Windows experience, Windows 11 is designed to bring you closer to what you love.”

The big news aside from the launch confirmation is that Windows 11 will ship with the majority of the features Microsoft unveiled at the introduction event. Yes, that means the new Windows platform UI, the new Microsoft Store, and Android app support out of the box.

Amazon’s App Store is serving as the underpinning for this availability, but it seems that Android apps will appear in the newly designed Microsoft Store. It is worth noting that Amazon’s marketplace does not feature Google applications.

Windows 11 is available as a free upgrade for Windows 10 users, and Microsoft will roll it out in phase. The company says the launch is focusing on quality and the release cycle applies lessons learned from Windows 10 updates. Microsoft points out this means new devices will get Windows 11 first.

Some PCs will not be able to upgrade to Windows 11 because of hardware limitations. Microsoft this week also closed the door on those users manually upgrading through an ISO file.

Tip of the day: Headsets are a vital tool for communication and can cause stressful moments when they don´t work as planned. In our tutorial we are showing you how to properly set up a headset on your Windows 10 PC so this will be a thing of the past.
