Intune policies for a user-friendly OneDrive for Business client deployment


When using the default deployment of OneDrive for Business included in Microsoft 365 Apps for Business or Enterprise, users face many probes and settings that can be confusing or frustrating. By default, OneDrive will not sign in automatically, instead it asks the user which local profile folders they want to backup, and allows full network bandwidth to be consumed. Using Intune Administrative Templates — ADMX-backed Intune policies using the same type of XML as group policy — you can change all this, making for a seamless first-run experience.

In this article, you’ll find out how to configure Intune to achieve a OneDrive configuration that:

  • Signs in the authenticated user and skips tutorial/setup pages
  • Syncs the local Documents, Desktop, and Picture folders
  • Controls the network utilisation of the client
  • Warns the user if a significant number of files have been deleted
  • Blocks syncing non-work OneDrive accounts
  • Enables real-time co-authoring in Office desktop apps
  • Automatically syncs SharePoint Document Libraries
  • Blocks users changing their OneDrive folder path

Combined, these settings will make your OneDrive for Business deployment a smooth, user-friendly experience that keeps your helpdesk and users happy.

Create a Configuration Profile for Intune Policies

Configuration Profile is a collection of Intune settings, managed in Microsoft Endpoint Manager.

Navigate to, choose Devices in the left navigation pane, then Configuration Profiles. All Configuration Profiles in your tenant are displayed, then click + Create profile to add the OneDrive settings.

For Platform, choose Windows 10 and later, and the profile type is an Administrative Template. Then click Create. Remember, Administrative Templates are a lot like Group Policy Objects (GPOs), so the interface we’ll be configuring them in via Microsoft Endpoint Manager will look familiar if you are experienced in on-premises Active Directory GPO administration.

You must give your new profile a Name and, optionally, a Description, then proceed by clicking Next. It’s recommended you enter a meaningful description to help either your future self or other tenant administrators know the logic behind this profile. This is particularly true if you will have multiple OneDrive Configuration Profiles due to different rules for different groups.

This is where things will look familiar if you have used GPOs before. Settings are divided between Computer Configuration and User Configuration, which means a setting will apply to all users that login to that device, or the setting will follow the user regardless of which device they sign in to. All but one of the policies we will configure are exclusive to either computer or user configurations; the exception being syncing SharePoint sites, which supports either computer or user-based scenarios.

Click All Settings then, in the search and filter bar, enter “OneDrive”. This filters the massive list of settings to only those relevant to the OneDrive client.

Now, we’ll start configuring the actual settings. Each setting to achieve the outcomes described at the start of this article should be selected, then configured as described before saving it by hitting the OK button on that setting’s page.

Choose Enabled.

This setting enables real-time co-authoring and collaboration in the full version of Office apps on Windows. For example, if a file is stored in OneDrive for Business, Teams, or a SharePoint Document Library, multiple users can work together on the file and see each other’s changes as they happen. This is a big productivity boost for environments used to locked files typically seen when operating with mapped drives.

Choose a Name and Value.

This setting will make SharePoint Online Document Libraries available to the user via File Explorer without them having to manually choose the Sync option in that library’s web page. The Value you enter for this setting is obtained by initiating the sync process manually, then copying the library ID to your clipboard.

There are a few important points to note about this setting when it comes to Intune policies. Firstly, if a user logs in for the first time and doesn’t see the synced directory, that unfortunately is to be expected – because Microsoft advises it can take up to eight hours for it to appear. Secondly, it only works on Windows 10 1709+ with another setting, User OneDrive Files On-Demand, also enabled (more on that setting further on in this article).

Finally, Microsoft’s guidance is to not enable this on directories that will have over 5000 files or folders (that’s or, not and), and do not push this setting out to over 1000 devices.

Personally, when it comes to Intune policies, I have seen enormous libraries sync with no problems (tens of thousands of files), but you will obviously not be supported by Microsoft if you choose to do so. Furthermore, my experience isn’t the same as everyone’s — the guidance would not be there if there were no known problems. Test thoroughly and acknowledge the risk if this is a requirement.

Regarding the deployment of this setting, you may want to consider two more things. First, the setting Convert synced team site files to online-only files could be used in conjunction with this to limit the files actually being retained on the device, instead only available when the device is online. This will help your bandwidth and local storage. Second, consider separating this individual setting from all the others configured in this policy. By deploying this setting as a standalone policy, you can have general OneDrive settings grouped together, deployed to all users, then separately have more control over what cloud directories are synced by other policies, scoped at a more fine-grained level.

Disable the tutorial that appears at the end of OneDrive Setup

Choose Enabled.

To improve the sign-on experience for our users, it’s recommended you hide the tutorial. I appreciate this may be counter-intuitive (“help them by hiding a guide?” I hear you shout), but in doing so we assume you have already educated your users on what OneDrive is and how to use it. We want our users to get up and running with their device and software as soon as possible, so reducing the number of clicks helps.

The OneDrive client can essentially do a speed test of the current connection and set an upload limit based on a percentage of this. Even if the policy is set, there is a one-minute period every ten minutes to allow unlimited upload utilisation, but only for small files. This is also the period in which the maximum upload speed is calculated, which makes it dynamic based on changing availability.

Choose Enabled and enter your tenant ID as a Name with the value of 1 to enable for that tenant.

This setting will lock the folder used for OneDrive synchronisation to the default one, but can be used in conjunction with the Set the default location for the OneDrive folder if you require for it to be something else. Although users would not be prompted to choose a folder by default when we enable automatic sign-on, by enabling this setting we restrict the possibility of them choosing to stop syncing their OneDrive, then start again but choosing an alternative path.

This self-explanatory setting will block any consumer Microsoft account from using the OneDrive client’s sync engine, thereby introducing some controls over the management of company devices in your tenant.

A potential crisis-averting setting, when you enable this your users will be warned by a toast notification if they delete 200 or more files.

The files will delete from the local device but, but if you choose Restore files, the cloud synchronised versions of the files will download again. Additionally, the user will be warned about this by a changed OneDrive icon in the notification area, and another warning when they click it.

Choose Enabled, enter your Tenant ID, and choose No against Show notification to users after folders have been redirected.

If you take one setting away from this blog on Intune Policies, make it this one. This leverages a OneDrive feature called Known Folder Move (KFM) to sync the existing local user profile’s Documents, Desktop, and Pictures folders.

If your environment is introducing OneDrive for Business for the first time, this is a game changer, because it takes the folders used the most and protects them with cloud sync; one less habit you need to re-train them on. If you are introducing to a new environment for the first time, it’s best to stage the deployment — Microsoft recommends around 4,000 per week. Make sure you use the setting Limit the sync app upload rate to a percentage of throughput to not completely overwhelm your network.

Lastly, think about file paths. When KFM is enabled, the folders will go from being directly within %userprofile% to %userprofile%\OneDrive – YourCompany. The implications and risks involved are things such as an increase in the file path character count (does your line of business software support long paths?), or if users have shortcuts to files, these will need to be changed.

OK, maybe this should be the “if you’re only going to take away one thing…” setting. Silent sign in will authenticate the OneDrive client with the currently signed in Windows user. This is only available as a device setting, so will apply whenever anyone new signs in. This will only work if it’s an Azure AD joined device, authenticated as an Azure AD user, or a Hybrid Azure AD joined device, authenticated a user with a synchronised or federated account.

Use OneDrive Files On-Demand

Choose Enabled.

A prerequisite for automatically synchronising SharePoint Document Libraries, and important setting even if you don’t want to sync libraries, this enables the OneDrive Files On-Demand feature on Windows 10 1709+. Files On-Demand allows files to be seen in File Explorer, but exist only in their cloud location, and only download when you need them, and are fully integrated into the OS itself so any application can open them. A user can also choose to Always keep on this device or Free up space from a file or folder’s context menu, and OneDrive will, hierarchically, download or remove an offline cache of the files.

With your settings all configured, choose Next on the Configuration settings page.

This takes you to Scope tags. Configure these if your environment uses them, or do not change the defaults, then proceed by clicking Next.

The next step in deployment is Assignments, in which we specify what groups to assign or exclude from the Configuration Profile. The intricacies of how best to architect policy assignment is out of scope for this article but remember that some policies were configured for either users or devices, so we must include Azure AD groups with both of those to get the necessary settings. After making your selection, choose Next.

Finally, you are presented with the Review + create screen, within which you can double check everything has been set as expected (seriously, double check those assignments!) and make the settings live by clicking Create.

Devices in scope being deployed with Autopilot will pick up these settings during deployment, and users will experience a seamless first-run experience that will get them able to access OneDrive for Business as soon as they sign in. For existing devices, you will need to wait for the device to check in to Intune for the settings to apply, which means potentially not seeing the effects until after the next reboot.

Microsoft Details Surface Firmware Support for the First Time


Microsoft Surface devices are becoming increasingly popular. Every couple of years, Microsoft brings new versions of its hardware, with most Surface products now on multiple generations. It is interesting over the years; Microsoft has never talked about the firmware lifecycle of its Surface devices.

That is changing this week. For the first time, Microsoft is telling users how long they can expect to get firmware support on their hardware. This is important information for all Surface owners, but especially for those who are on devices that are a few years old.

“In response to requests from customers for more detailed lifecycle information to help plan and manage hardware and software deployments, Surface is offering additional guidance on our driver and firmware updates,” the Microsoft Docs website explains.

“This lifecycle policy covers drivers and firmware releases for Windows based Surface devices. The lifecycle begins when a device is first released and concludes when Surface ceases publication of drivers and firmware updates on the End of Servicing date.”

Five-Year Support?

At the moment, the most interesting aspects of the Microsoft Surface support lifecycle list are the older devices. For example, the original failure that was the Surface RT, as well as the original Surface Pro and its sequel. We already know those devices are no longer supported.

That gives an idea of how long Microsoft maintains support for devices. For example, the Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 from 2014 and 2015 respectively still have support… or do they? Well, according to Microsoft’s list they do, but we know firmware updates have already stopped on these devices.

Microsoft does say the Surface Pro 4 and original Surface Book will have support until November 13, 2021. That means we can assume Microsoft supports its Surface hardware for five years. Other devices on the list seem to corroborate that assumption.

Google Photos Kills Free Storage – Here’s What You Need to Know


Google has a reputation for doing a decent job at giving users free access to cloud tools. For example, the Drive file sharing and cloud storage service offers 15GB of free space. That makes the company’s decision to kill off free storage on Google Photos perplexing.

According to Google, free storage will stop being available from May 31, 2021. From the next day, June 1, all images uploaded to Google Photos will go against the 15GB Drive limit. Under the previous policy, all high-quality compressed photos did not count towards Google Drive storage.

In other words, images were stored for free independent of the 15GB storage on Drive.

Naturally, many Google Photos users are asking why this is happening. Firstly, Photos is not really a business tool, so this is not Google trying to drive users towards the paid version of G Suite. Instead, the company suggests the new policy reflects the overwhelming demand for uploads.

This makes sense because Photos is clearly one of the most popular image storage solutions. Google says 28 billion photos and videos are put up each week. Yeah, that’s a lot and it seems Google has decided it a) wants to cash in, and b) wants to cover some of the massive server costs it must take to run the app.

Not for Everyone

If you have GBs of images and videos on Google Photos, you may be worried about suddenly being hit with a bill new June. Well, don’t worry because Google says the new policy will not affect any content uploaded to the app before May 31. If you are planning on using the tool to upload more images, sometime over the next six months would be the time to do it!

It’s also worth noting this change in policy does not affect owns of Google’s Pixel smartphones. The company is continuing to sweeten the deal of owning its hardware by allowing free storage beyond June 1, 2021 on Google Photos.

It is also worth noting users can still upload free images and videos up to the 15GB free storage of Google Drive. In fact, Google says this represents 80% of all users of the app.

Microsoft’s PowerShell 7.1 Update Reaches General Availability


Microsoft is rolling out a new version of its PowerShell automating and scripting language platform. Specifically, PowerShell 7.1 is rolling out in general availability, eight months after is first landed in preview.

As the version number suggests, this is the first major update following PowerShell 7, which arrived in March. PowerShell 7.1 is coming to all supporting platforms, including Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

Microsoft’s Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, and 2019 are also included. Users on macOS 10.13 and above, and several Linux distributions can also download the latest update.

In its release noted, Microsoft discusses why it aims to achieve with this update:

“For PowerShell 7.1, we decided to build on the foundation established in PowerShell 7.0 with a strong focus on community issues, especially where we could make additive changes and quality-of-life improvements without introducing instability or breaking changes. As a platform with over 115 million sessions per month, we’re absolutely committed to ensuring that PowerShell remains a stable and performant platform, even after significant version upgrades like 7.1.”

Focused Update

While there are no sweeping changes in PowerShell 7.1, it makes some tweaks and additions to version 7. For example, new modules and tooling are available on the build. However, while these are available in the preview, Microsoft says they may not be available for the version 7.1 general release.

PowerShell 7.1 is available to download from GitHub, or alternatively you can get it from the Microsoft Store.

Earlier this week, we reported on new PowerShell backdoors that are being used to attack Microsoft Exchange servers. Microsoft has yet to officially respond to these attacks.

Google Project Zero Discloses GitHub Action Flaw Following Missed Fix Deadline

Google Project Zero (GPZ) has sent out confirmation of a security bug in Microsoft-owned GitHub. According to the security research team, there is a high-severity vulnerability in the popular open source code-hosting website.

If you are unfamiliar with Google Project Zero, it is a security team that hunts for security holes in popular software solutions. If a vulnerability is found, Google gives developers 90 days to issue a fix. If no action is taken, Project Zero publicly discloses the flaw.

According to the team, GitHub requested another 90-day extension for a bug found in the Actions features. The Project Zero team did not grant the extension and have now gone public with the vulnerability.

Actions was launched back in 2018. It gives developers tools to improve their projects. By leveraging Docker code containers, developers will be able to set a schedule of events. Projects can have event triggers ranging from an introduction of new code to testing channels that trigger Actions.

Missing the Deadline

This flaw is rare for Project Zero because GitHub was unable to issue a fix. According to Google, 95.8% of all vulnerabilities are patched before the 90-day deadline.

In its disclosure notes for the vulnerability, GPZ says GitHub has known of the problem since July 21 and missed an October 18 deadline. The team’s Felix Wilhelm adds the Actions tool commands are “highly vulnerable to injection attacks”.

“As the runner process parses every line printed to STDOUT looking for workflow commands, every GitHub action that prints untrusted content as part of its execution is vulnerable. In most cases, the ability to set arbitrary environment variables results in remote code execution as soon as another workflow is executed,” writes Wilhelm.

“I’ve spent some time looking at popular GitHub repositories and almost any project with somewhat complex GitHub actions is vulnerable to this bug class.”

It is worth noting GitHub has not tried to sweep this problem under the rug. On October 1, the company issued a post detailing the problem (CVE-2020-15228). The company removed vulnerable commands at that point.

Intel Details Benefits of Rocket Lake CPUs with Cypress Cove Cores


We already know Intel’s next generation of desktop processors is coming in 2021. Intel has already made the announcement the Rocket Lake CPUs are coming soon. Now, the chipmaker has provided some more details about the S-series of the line, which includes Cypress Cove core architecture.

In a blog post, Intel says the Cypress Cove cores in the Rocket Lake S CPUs will deliver a double-digit increase in performance over the previous generation. Unfortunately, the company does not say what specifically this means in terms of raw numbers.

“The 11th Gen Intel Core S-series desktop processor will introduce a new desktop architecture, called Cypress Cove, designed to transform hardware and software efficiency and increase performance​.”

Cypress Cove are built on 14nm. Intel says they are similar to the 10nm Ice Lake cores but simply built on more affordable 14nm architecture. Elsewhere, the Rocket Lake CPUs will allow DDR4 RAM with speeds up to 3200MHz and PCIe Gen 4, across 20 lines.


In its blog post, Intel details some of the main changes coming with Rocket Lake S processors with Cypress Cove cores:

  • New Cypress Cove architecture featuring Ice Lake Core architecture and Tiger Lake Graphics architecture.
  • Double-digit percentage IPC performance improvement.3
  • Better gen-over-gen performance.
  • Up to 20 CPU PCIe 4.0 lanes4 for more configuration flexibility.
  • Enhanced Intel UHD graphics featuring Intel Xe Graphics architecture.
  • Intel® Quick Sync Video, offering better video transcoding and hardware acceleration for latest codecs.
  • New overclocking features5 for more flexible tuning performance.
  • Intel® Deep Learning Boost and VNNI support​.

No OEMs have yet to announce a device running the new CPU technology. However, Intel says devise should launch during early next year. That means CES 2021 would be a good bet for some hardware announcements. Of course, the next edition of CES will be totally virtual due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Microsoft Defender Continues Quest to Remove TrickBot Malware


A week ago, Microsoft and a coalition of security firms took down TrickBot. On a global mission, the companies removed one of the largest malware botnets. However, the work was not over for the Microsoft Defender team.

Despite taking down TrickBot infrastructure, Microsoft Defender employees knew the cybercrime community would fight back. It was expected the botnet would reappear and operators would bring new servers online.

Microsoft says it was waiting for this to happen and has been continuing to remove TrickBot services since last week’s announcement. Furthermore, the company will keep a clamp on the botnet in the coming weeks.

Other companies joining Microsoft Defender in the initial effort were ESET, FS-ISAC, NTT, Symantec, and Black Lotus Labs.

The Microsoft Defender team points out removing TrickBot was important as it is one of the biggest botnets. Indeed, the company says over one million machines have been infected by TrickBot malware.

Continuing to Fight

In a new blog post, the company says it will continue to fight against the botnet. In fact, 94% of all command and control (C&C) servers have been taken down.

“From the time we began our operation until October 18, we have taken down 120 of the 128 servers we identified as Trickbot infrastructure around the world,” said Tom Burt, CVP of Customer Security and Trust at Microsoft. 62 were taken out by the initial movement, while 58 have been removed since last week’s effort.

Microsoft says the remaining seven services are related to IoT hardware. They could not be shut down because they are not located in web hosting data centers. In other words, Microsoft needs to collaborate with local internet service providers. That collaboration is currently happening.

Microsoft Research Highlights Tilt-Response Recognition Technology for Apps

Microsoft Research has developed a new technology that helps applications orient exactly to the tilt of a screen, or the hinge angle on a laptop or folding smartphone. While the tech could have wider implications, it seems Microsoft’s initial goal is for it to work on the Surface Studio.

Apps reacting to device accelerometers and automatically switching screen modes between landscape and portrait is hardly a new thing. However, Microsoft Research has made a breakthrough allowing orientation based on tilts.

The Surface Studio is a good test device because it can be sat in various guises and angles. Any way the display is angled, (low, high, or another gradient), there are limitations. One angle may be good for a specific task but not for another. For example, lying flat may be good for drawing, but less so for typing.

Microsoft Research looked at how app transitions work through screen orientation:

“Because what is appropriate also depends on the application and task, we explore a range of app-specific transitions between reading vs. writing (annotation), public vs. personal, shared person-space vs. task-space, and other nuances of input and feedback, contingent on display angle. Continuous responses provide interactive transitions tailored to each use-case.”

Improving App Displays

In terms of drawing apps, Microsoft describes how switching between pen-optimized and mouse-optimized can be achieved. Apps will be able to orient in continual response to different angles of the display.

Microsoft’s video to accompany the announcement shows how work scenarios will look through the new display angles.

It is unclear Microsoft’s long-term goal with the technology. However, many of the company’s devices are heavily reliant on their screen tech. Hinges have become a fundamental part of Surface products, including the new Surface Duo smartphone with its two separate displays.

Microsoft Digital Marketing Center Arrives as Hub for Managing Marketing Campaigns

Launched today, the Microsoft Digital Marketing Center is a Microsoft Garage project that allows businesses and customers to manage their online marketing presence. It taps into major ad platforms and social networks to provide an overview and a central hub for boosting visibility.

Users can set up advertising campaigns quickly, matching output to their budget. It is also possible to automate ads with the Digital Marketing Center learning from previous ads you create. By leveraging AI, Microsoft is able to help users automatically manage their budget and get the best outcomes on campaigns.

Elsewhere, Microsoft says it’s simple to generate reports to review key areas of digital marketing. Furthermore, the Center also acts as a creation service. Marketers can build content and link it to ad and social platforms.

Microsoft has been piloting the program in recent months. Now, the company says the Digital Marketing Center is available in an open beta. However, it seems the service is only available in the U.S. so far.

Microsoft’s New Surface Laptop Go and Surface Pro X Are Now Shipping


A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft made a surprise hardware announcement, debuting a new Surface Pro X variant and new category Surface Laptop Go. Now, the expansions to the Surface brands are reaching customers.

Microsoft says both devices are now available (October 13). For customers who took up pre-orders at introduction, Microsoft is rolling out shipment notes as we write. For customers who buy today, delivery will depend on location and retailer.

Despite the Surface Laptop Go being a completely new device, there has not been much buzz around it. Instead, it is the new Surface Pro X variant that is more interesting.

The new Surface Pro X packs a SQ2 processor and comes with an exclusive Platinum colorway, costing $1,499. Microsoft bills its new processor as best in class, making this Pro X variant one for power users. It extends the company’s push for Windows 10 on ARM to be a success.

Surface Laptop Go

When reporting on the announcement of the Surface Laptop Go, I was unhappy with the device. I thought it was over-expensive and under-powered. Nothing has changed my mind since then, making this arguably the biggest “what?” in the recent history of Surface hardware.

As refresher, the Surface Laptop Go combines the powerful Surface Laptop Go with the entry-level Surface Go concept for a device that screams “meh”.

It has a 12.4-inch 1536×1024 display, which is hugely disappointing as it does not even provide Full HD media. The CPU is firmly in the mid-range. It is an Intel Ice Lake Core i5-1035G1 that will handle most normal-use tasks with ease. It’s the same story with the 4GB of RAM available, it will get the job done but is hardly amazing.

I previously wrote the following on this device, questioning its place in the market:

“It’s clear there are better laptops on the market in the $500 to $600 range. With that in mind, it is hard to see who the new Surface Laptop Go is for. Maybe users who simply want a Microsoft Surface device but don’t have a large budget? But even then, the normal Surface Go is probably a better bet. Looking over the new device, it’s easy to see why Microsoft announced it quietly.”
