Intel CEO Says Chip Shortage to Extend into 2024

download – 2022-05-05T170329.781

While the chip shortage is easing, it is very much still ongoing and any hopes of its improving in 2023 are unlikely. That’s according to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, who says shortages could run into 2024 because of a lack of manufacturing tools.

There has been a worldwide chip shortage that began before the pandemic in 2020 and was only exasperated during the COVID-19 crisis. Factories going into lockdown and a shortage of materials meant manufacturers were unable to build semi-conductors.

All areas of consumer and enterprise tech were affected, including home appliances, smartphones, TVs, and servers. One of the reasons the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 remain in short supply is because of the chip shortage. Furthermore, Microsoft put down tepid Windows uptake in 2019 down to the shortage.

However, predictions earlier this year pointed to the shortage easing during 2022 before a return to normal manufacturing in 2023. Speaking to CNBC, Intel CEO Gelsinger is pouring icy water on those hopes.

“We believe the overall semiconductor shortage will now drift into 2024, from our earlier estimates in 2023, just because the shortages have now hit equipment and some of those factory ramps will be more challenged.”

Increasing Demand

While the manufacturing constraints caused by the pandemic have eased, more demand for devices with chips is growing. It is no longer computers, consoles, and phones only. Smart technology means many home appliances use semiconductors, as well as automobiles.

In other words, factories are producing more semiconductors than they ever have before but are still struggling with demand.

Microsoft Edge Secure Network Brings a Free VPN to Edge

Surface-Laptop-Studio-Windows-11-696×385 (1)

Microsoft is working on integrating a VPN service into the Microsoft Edge web browser. Called the Microsoft Edge Secure Network, the Virtual Private Network (VPN) will be similar to third-party providers, except it will be directly built into the browser.

For this tool, Microsoft is not building a VPN from scratch. Instead, the Microsoft Edge Secure Network is powered by Cloudflare. According to Microsoft, all user data and diagnostic information will be removed and deleted every 24 hours.

Other browsers – such as Opera and Firefox – already have a built-in VPN, so Edge will reach parity with those rivals. In a blog post discussing the tool, Microsoft points to the following features:

  • “Encrypts your connection: Encrypts your internet connection to help protect your data from online threats like hackers. When using Microsoft Edge Secure network, your data is routed from Edge through an encrypted tunnel to create a secure connection, even when using a non-secure URL that starts with HTTP. This makes it harder for hackers to access your browsing data on a shared public Wi-Fi network.
  • Helps prevent online tracking: By encrypting your web traffic directly from Microsoft Edge, we help prevent your internet service provider from collecting your browsing data like details about which websites you visit.
  • Keeps your location private: Online entities can use your location and IP address for profiling and sending you targeted ads. Microsoft Edge Secure Network lets you browse with a virtual IP address that masks your IP and replaces your geolocation with a similar regional address to make it more difficult for online trackers to follow you as you browse.
  • Is free to use: Get 1 gigabyte of free data every month when you sign into Microsoft Edge with your Microsoft Account.  See below instructions to turn on your Microsoft Edge Secure Network.”

Details

While Microsoft Edge Secure Network will come to all users, it isn’t widely available yet. Although, it will be part of the new Microsoft Edge release and be located in the menu in the right top corner.

To use the VPN in Edge, users much have a Microsoft account and be signed in. There is also a limit of 1GB of data on the free service.

Microsoft Debuts GitHub Desktop 3.0

download – 2022-04-29T132530.610

GitHub-Desktop-3.0-Update-Image

Microsoft says GitHub Desktop 3.0 is now available. With this release, the open-source repository is adding a bunch of new features. As the version number suggests, this is the follow up to GitHub Desktop 2.0, which was launched back in 2019.

If you are unfamiliar with GitHub Desktop, it is a version of the platform that works on PCs that are offline.

Leading the new feature on GitHub Desktop 3.0 is an ability that allows users to review the status of their pull requests. Developers can use this tool to decide which code is production-ready. In a blog post to introduce the new platform version, GitHub describes the feature in the following way:

“Just click on the badge with the pull request number, and start diving into the checks, jobs, and steps to better understand and fix whatever problem you might run into. You still can’t find out why your checks failed? Don’t worry! You can just re-run your checks to give them another chance to succeed. Users also now have the ability to re-run failed or individual GitHub Action checks.”

Other Features

Elsewhere in the new GitHub Desktop version, there is now support for high-signal notifications. With this support, the platform gives users the ability to sort through notifications that persistently return. That means users will only see important notifications for the repository they are on.

Failed pull requests are a frustrating fact of the GitHub experience, but Desktop 3.0 will notify users when they fail to file a commit. The platform sends users to a description of the failure and why it happened. This will make it easier to solve issues.

Tip of the day: Headsets are a vital tool for communication and can cause stressful moments when they don´t work as planned. In our tutorial we are showing you how to properly set up a headset on your Windows PC so this will be a thing of the past.

WhatsApp Beta on Windows Gets Chat Filter Tools

Whats-App-Beta-On-Windows-11-Dark-Mode

Whats-App-Beta-On-Windows-11-Dark-Mode

I am so used to major developers giving their apps little attention on Windows that a new WhatsApp desktop update is always a pleasant surprise. That is because the messaging service is one of the few big apps that receive consistent powerful upgrades on Windows. And with the latest update, the WhatsApp Beta UWP app is getting enhanced chat filtering.

If you are unfamiliar with WhatsApp Beta, it is a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app that is available for desktop. It is different to the full WhatsApp Desktop because it is a WinUI app written in XAML. It has recently been updated to get the Windows 11 aesthetic.

In the latest update for the app, users can now filter their chats. Among the filters available in the app are contacts, non-contacts, show messages from unread chats, and groups. All of those filters are self-explanatory and allow you to narrow down chats based on your selection.

This new enhancement is arriving as part of WhatsApp Beta 2.2216.4.0, which is rolling out to the Windows Store now. It is worth noting this feature brings the app up to speed with the iOS and Android versions, which already have the filters.

WhatsApp Desktop Update

WhatsApp is doing a great job keeping its apps up to date on the Windows platform. Away from the Beta app,  the company is also treating its Desktop app well.

Earlier this month, an update allowed the app to become arguably more appealing than the web version. Four new features came to the app during the release. The first two – archive chats permanently and show message reactions – are standard on iOS and Android but are now coming to Windows 11.

Video calling and GIFs are also landing on the WhatsApp app on the platform.

Microsoft Build 2022: Registration for the All-Digital Event Is Now Open

download – 2022-04-28T150041.656

Microsoft-Build-2022-Home-Edit-WinBuzzer

Back in April, Microsoft confirmed Microsoft Build 2022 will get underway on May 24 and run until May 26. Since then, some of the first sessions for the event were disclosed, focusing on the metaverse and Windows development. On Tuesday, Microsoft opened registrations for the annual developer conference, while also confirming it will be all-digital.

That all-digital announcement is not really a surprise. When Microsoft Build 2022 was confirmed a month ago, the company did not mention if it would be all-digital or not. However, it was obvious the event would be online because the company did not discuss a venue.

Microsoft has been hosting all conferences and product launches online since the start of the pandemic. While live events are back, the company is seemingly sticking to the all-digital model, at least for now.Hosting online does have some benefits for partners, developers, and customers. Specifically, there is no longer a limit on the number of attendees. Restrictions like venue capacity or travel capabilities. Because Microsoft Build 2022 is online, anyone can register and attend for free

Open Sessions

While Microsoft has not published the complete catalog of sessions yet, the company has revealed details on two upcoming Build sessions.

Microsoft titles the first sessions “Microsoft Build Into Focus: Metaverse,” and it will get underway on Tuesday, May 24 between 3:30 PM and 4:14 PM EDT. Sam George, CVP of Azure IoT and Microsoft Teams General Manager Nicole Herskowitz will lead the session.

The second session is titled “Develop Windows apps on and for a rich ecosystem of platforms and devices,” which will happen on Wednesday, May 25 between 4:00 PM and 4:45 PM EDT.

Leak: Facebook Engineers Say Company Has No Idea Where User Data Goes or How It Is Used

Facebook-Security-YouTube-Reuse-696×385

Facebook Security YouTube Reuse

Nobody does tech scandals better than Facebook, which is why Meta was born to distance the company’s metaverse products from the tainted social media network. In the latest sorry escapade, it seems Facebook has no idea where all the user data it gathers goes and what it does with it.

According to a leaked document by privacy engineers in the company’s Ad and Business Product division, Facebook is mishandling user information. This comes from the team that manages the ads system on Facebook.

This is no small thing considering ads are hugely important and drive the brand’s revenue. In other words, this team oversees what is the very foundation of Facebook’s monetization. Ads are also the main reason why the company gathers user information, allowing advertisers to use the data to target customers.

While that sucks, it is sort of part of the deal when you sign up to Facebook and use its myriad (some excellent) services for free. However, the leaked document shows engineers are concerned about where customer data goes and how it is used. The authors of the document are calling for changes to better manage information.

Broken Data Trail

The core theme of the leak is Facebook does not follow the data trail. Engineers do not know where customer data goes or how the company uses it. Regulators around the world demand certain data protocols from social media companies. For example, article 5 of the EU’s GDPR laws states tech companies must know where the data goes.

Specifically, the article says data must be “collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes and not further processed in a manner that is incompatible with those purposes.”

In other words, data must be gathered with a specific usage goal in mind. If Facebook does not know what happens to the data, it cannot guarantee it is being used for a specific goal. Engineers are worried and used the following analogy to explain the data problem:

“Imagine you hold a bottle of ink in your hand. This bottle of ink is a mixture of all kinds of user data (3PD, 1PD, SCD, Europe, etc.) You pour that ink into a lake of water (our open data systems; our open culture) … and it flows … everywhere. How do you put that ink back in the bottle? How do you organize it again, such that it only flows to the allowed places in the lake?””

If you’re unfamiliar with the terms, 3PD signifies third-party data, 1PD is first-party data, and SCD means sensitive categories data.

U.S. Army Could Pull the Plug on HoloLens Contract, Costing Microsoft Billions

download – 2022-04-27T103911.440

Soldiers-Wearing-Microsoft-HoloLens-2-Army-IVAS-Microsoft

Back in March, we reported on Microsoft’s concern that its $22bn HoloLens contract with the U.S. Army is not going to plan. With reports, early trials are not going well and the military is unhappy, there is a lot of pressure on next month’s full field test. New reports suggest Microsoft is in danger of losing out on a chunk of cash from the project.

It seems the $22bn was not upfront, no matter what, payment. Instead, it is an incremental project where the U.S. Army would pay that amount if all goes well. As all is not reportedly going well, the military is already looking to reduce the amount it will pay.

Specifically, the Department of Defense is already considering putting $394 million of the contract “on hold”. A new report from The Register suggests it was never likely the contract would reach the full $22bn ceilings. It seems that figure was a headline grabber and the $22bn number was an estimate for all possible positive outcomes.

The report says Microsoft is more likely to make less than half the claimed amount. Sure, half of $22bn is still a lot of money, but it is clear the project is quickly becoming troublesome for Microsoft and the army.

Growing Frustration

Last year, Microsoft expanded its partnership to stock the US Army with HoloLens 2 and help develop new technology. Known as the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), the tech w ill leverage location data from soldiers over a tactical range to provide visualizations of where other soldiers in a squadron are. This will be valuable in low-visibility situations such as in smoke, sandstorms, or jungle.

It is unclear if the technology is just not there yet for what the U.S. Army expects to do with it, or whether specific issues with HoloLens are the problem. Either way, it seems Microsoft will not be getting the full $22bn.

Meta – the company formed to be Facebook’s parent and a leader in metaverse development – is preparing to open its first brick and mortar store. Opening on May 9, 2022, the location will be in Meta’s California base in Burlingame. Known as the Meta Store, customers will be able to see the company’s metaverse products, including hardware and how it integrates with software.

Among the products on display will be the Meta Quest game, Portal video calling, and Ray-Ban Stories. There will also be a Quest 2 display that users can test hardware on VR games like Real VR FishingGOLF+Supernatural, and Beat Saber.

The Quest 2 demo area of the Meta Store will be immersive with a wall-to-wall curved LED display. Meta says this will replicate using a VR headset on a larger scale.

Martin Gilliard, Head of Meta Store, said:

“The Meta Store is going to help people make that connection to how our products can be the gateway to the metaverse in the future. We’re not selling the metaverse in our store, but hopefully people will come in and walk out knowing a little bit more about how our products will help connect them to it.”

Basically, Meta wants to highlight how the development of metaverse technology is at the moment. However, the store will also provide insights into the future and what users can expect in the coming years.

From May 9, the store will be open Monday to Friday from 11AM to 6PM PT.

LAPSUS$ Attacks on T-Mobile Targeted Company’s Source Code

download – 2022-04-26T155045.752

Cyber-Security-Lock-Pixabay

Lapsus (stylizes LAPSUS$) has been making headlines this year through several high-profile attacks and important arrests of people associated with the group. In the latest information, KrebsOnSecurity reviewed a private chat message between members of LAPSUS$ regarding a breach on T-Mobile.

The chat happened in the week before active members of the group were arrested last month. During March, the threat group was able to steal the source code for a selection of the company’s products and services.

However, T-Mobile insists no customer or government data was compromised during the breach. LAPSUS$ was targeting employees of T-Mobile, taking advantage of their access to the company’s services. This allows SIM swap attacks, which involves reassigning a target mobile number to a device controlled by the group.

One of the most interesting things about LAPSUS is how quickly the group arose and how potent it became. It was only first seen in December 2021 and in the early months of 2022 carried out attacks on Vodafone, Samsung, and Nvidia.

LAPSUS Success

Also, Microsoft confirmed the group was behind an attack against Bing, Bing Maps, and Cortana. In March, the other interesting – amazing actually – thing about LAPSUS$ is the group was comprised by a bunch of kids. In March, City of London police arrested teenagers associated with the group, including the leader.

Reports point to a disgruntled Lapsus customer who doxed the mastermind behind the group and led to the arrests. In a special report, Krebs on Security said the leader bought the Doxbin sit that allows people to share personal information on other people.

However he is said to have been a poor website operator and sold the site in January, but not before releasing the whole Doxbin dataset online. To retaliate, the community doxed him.
