Leak: Surface Laptop 5 to Ship with New Generation AMD Ryzen CPU

Microsoft has messed around enough with Surface product release cycles that it is often a guessing game to know which devices will ship during any given year. However, one device that is almost certainly launching in 2022 is the Surface Laptop 5. While Microsoft has not gone official with the product, information is reaching us about its specs.

One new leak suggests this may be a Surface Laptop to be interested in. Let’s be clear, the Surface Laptop is a great piece of hardware, but it is hard to get excited by yearly launches for laptops that changes incrementally.

However, with the Surface Laptop 5, there is some early info that makes it more interesting. According to WindowsPrime.com, there are some specs that are already known about the device.

Specifically, the outlet points out the Surface Laptop 5 will arrive with AMD Ryzen chipsets on board. It is worth noting this will be the first Surface Laptop to provide AMD support. However, an AMD options will be available alongside the usual collection of Intel versions.

According to the report, the Surface Laptop 5 will arrive with the following options.

Surface Laptop 5 13.5″

  • 12th Generation Intel Core i5-1240P processor
  • 12th Generation Intel Core i7-1280P processor
  • AMD Ryzen 5 6680U Mobile Processor with Radeon Graphics Microsoft Surface Edition (6 cores)

Surface Laptop 5 15″

  • 12th Generation Intel Core i7-1280P processor
  • AMD Ryzen 7 6980U Mobile Processor with Radeon Graphics Microsoft Surface Edition (8 cores)

Other mentioned specs include one model with an Alcantara finish and a removable SSD up to 1TB. As always with these kinds of leaks, take it with a pinch of salt until more information is known.
