mail is such a winning formula and usable app that Google does not see the need to redesign the experience often. In fact, in recent years the email client has only had minor UI tweaks. That is now going to change with Google preparing a design change for the app.
While Gmail is the market-leading email provider, it seems Google is taking some inspiration from Microsoft Outlook with the new aesthetic. While the changes are not drastic – and calling this a revamp or overhaul is too much – the new design does transform the overall look of Gmail.
The UI looks smoother and cleaner, with Google seemingly focusing on tightening the design up a little. Again, there are design nods to Outlook that are hard to ignore. Google is hiding Applications on the left pane where emails and labels were previously shown. Those items are now next to the new options.
This subtle difference continues Google’s push – through the Workspace (G Suite) product – to unify its apps into a single ecosystem. The company wants users to feel they are using one connected app of tools (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, etc.) instead of a collection of separate services.
By placing applications in their new place, users no longer need to switch tabs to access other important Google apps directly in Gmail. Google is also including notifications for the apps, so you can see when you need to switch to another app.
Overall, the new UI is just better-looking and more professional than before. Google says the new Gmail will reach everyone apart from Workspace Essentials customers. At first users will be able to opt-in to use the new app, with that test phase happening on February 8. In April, that option will disappear, and the new Gmail will become default with an ability to use the older design included.
The ability to roll back will be taken away completely by the end of Q2 2022.
Tip of the day: Did you know that a virtual drive on Windows can help you with disk management for various reasons? A virtual drive is just simulated by the platform as a separate drive while the holding file might be stored anywhere on your system.
The data in the drive is available in files or folders, which are represented by software in the operating system as a drive. In our tutorial we show you different ways how to setup and use such virtual drives.
