Microsoft has provided details for users to workaround an Outlook search problem in Windows 11. Users have been having issues with the search function through the preview and full release of the platform.
Those problems include the Outlook app not showing search results when looking for specific emails on IMPA/POP, and sometimes the search function crashing the app. Microsoft points out the problem affected various versions of the email platform:
“This issue will happen with any account where the emails and other items are stored locally in PST or OST files such as POP and IMAP accounts,” Microsoft points out.
For Exchange and Microsoft 365 hosted accounts, this issue will affect offline search for the data in the locally stored OST files.”
Users will find this problem across Outlook 2019, Outlook 2016, and Outlook on Microsoft 365. The company says the issue stems from the Windows search index deleting through the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
Microsoft is rebuilding the tool, but in the meantime has issued a workaround through the registry. This fix involves disabling Windows Desktop Search in favor of Outlook’s native search tool.
- Click the Windows 11 Start menu, select Run and type regedit to open the registry.
- Locate the following subkey in the registry and select it:
- Choose Edit then New > Key and create a new name: “Windows Search”.
- Select the Windows Search key you just created.
- Click Edit > New > DWORD Value.
- Type PreventIndexingOutlook for the name of the DWORD, and then press Enter.
- Right-click PreventIndexingOutlook, and then click Modify.
- Type “1” in the Value data box to allow the registry entry to finalize.
- Restart Outlook
