Microsoft Intros New Windows 11 Media Player App

Back in September, we reported on a leak of a new Media Player app Microsoft was preparing for Windows 11. Now that Windows 11 is widely available, Microsoft is now testing the new app on the Dev Channel. Windows Insiders can see the new Media Player design and start using it on their test builds.

This refresh brings audio and video playback with a UI that matches the overall aesthetic of Windows 11:

“At the heart of Media Player is a full-featured music library that allows you to quickly browse and play music, as well as create and manage playlists,” explains Dave Grochocki, a senior program manager lead for Microsoft’s Windows apps division. “The update to the new Media Player will replace the Groove Music app.”

Groove Music is the remnants of Microsoft’s ill-fated music streaming app, while the legacy Media Player looks tired. In other words, it was time for an overhaul and Windows 11 is the perfect opportunity as Microsoft moves to a new design ethos.

“All your content in the music and video folders on your PC will appear automatically in your library, but you can also tell Media Player where to look for additional content in app settings,” adds Grochocki.

Two Apps

Microsoft points out the old Media Player app will remain, available through Windows Tools. We are not sure why that is the case, but we guess it will be removed eventually. Likely when the new Media Player becomes widely available, probably next spring (Windows 11 22H1)/

Either way, the new Media Player app is now the default way to watch videos and listen to audio on Windows 11.

Tip of the day: When you boot Windows it delays the launch of startup programs for ten seconds so your desktop and Windows services will have finished loading. If you want to speed up boot time, have a look at our tutorial about how to disable startup delay.
